Construction for the Columbia Pike Bike Boulevards 9th Street South Intersection Improvements project will begin in August, with completion scheduled for the end of 2017. It is an effort to make 9th Street a safer, more comfortable route for cyclists.
Work is expected to begin at the South Adams Street intersection, then move east along 9th Street to the South Wayne Street intersection, before proceeding west to the South Cleveland and South Highland Street intersections.
This is one of several bike boulevard projects that will reduce pedestrian crossing distances, provide ADA accessible crossings/curb ramps and slow the speed of vehicle traffic. Improvements will include construction of seven new driveway aprons and widening of the sidewalk in the southwest corner of the 9th Street and South Wayne Street intersection, where a new Capital Bikeshare station will be installed in 2019.
Work hours and construction impacts
When construction begins, work hours will be 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
- 9th Street South, South Wayne and Adams Streets will be reduced to one lane during these hours.
- On-street parking will be temporarily restricted.
- Crews will direct traffic through the work zone using flaggers, and all lanes will reopen at the end of each work day.
Residents will be notified at least three days in advance prior to their driveway aprons being replaced. Commercial driveway aprons will be kept open during construction. For further information visit the project’s website.
