BrickHaus is a Germanic-inspired American Gastropub that has drawn large crowds since its opening on Labor Day. It was a long and arduous process, but after a year of delays, on Sept. 5, BrickHaus finally opened to the public at 2 p.m. Ten minutes later, the restaurant was past capacity and visitors had to be turned away. The menu features Germanic inspired fare, four German beers, and craft beers brewed within 250 miles.
Recently quoted in Arlington Connection, owner Tony Wagner said “It feels fantastic! Everyone has been really patient. We’re ecstatic to be here. It’s been a lot of work.”

The building itself is the oldest standing building on Columbia Pike. Built in 1902, it was first a bank (the bar is built on the foundations of the old vault), and spent the last century as a brothel and various restaurants. Many Arlingtonians remember Michelangelo’s, the Italian restaurant that occupied the space for several decades.

Painstakingly restored after years of abandonment, they were able to highlight many elements of the old building, from the original marble floor of the bank lobby, to the exposed beams of the roof, to the 50s-era pin-up wallpaper discovered in the men’s restroom.

While permitting issues have delayed the opening of the patio till October, full service will be available inside daily at 4:00 p.m. till midnight during weekdays, with later hours on weekends.
