This year’s “William T. Newman, Jr. Spirit of Community Award” was given to Dr. Alfred Taylor, Jr. by the Arlington Community Foundation.
Named in honor of the Foundation’s Founder and President Emeritus, the Honorable William T. Newman, Jr., the award recognizes individuals and/or organizations who have demonstrated a tireless and unselfish commitment to improving the quality of life in Arlington.
Through decades of community service, Dr. Taylor exemplifies the Spirit of Community. Dr. Taylor was raised in the Nauck community of Arlington County, one of Virginia’s oldest African American Communities. He is the former president of the Arlington Branch of the NAACP, former President of the Nauck (now Green Valley) Civic Association, and still serves as the Board Chair of the Northern Virginia Juvenile Detention Facility Commission. He is also active in his church — Macedonia Baptist — where he serves as the Chairman of the Deacon’s Ministry. Dr. Taylor has also earned recognition as the Civic Community Patriarch of the Green Valley area of Arlington.
